2015 Whale Fest Events Schedule


The community is invited to all Whale Fest events.

Wednesday   April 8              
12:00–1:00pm Kodiak Gray Whale Project. A presentation by Stacy Studebaker. Location: Kodiak Senior Center (302 Erskine Ave). 486-2203. 

Thursday   April 23
7:00-8:30pm. “Minds in the Water". This film follows professional surfer Dave Rastovich's quest to protect dolphins, whales and the oceans we all share.  See his five-year journey around the world from Australia to the Galapagos, Tonga, California, Alaska and Japan, as he and his friends raise awareness and activate communities in an adventurous crusade to help protect whales and dolphins. Location: Kodiak National Wildlife Refuge Visitor Center (402 Center Ave). Contact: 487-2626.

Saturday   April 25
9:30am. Whale Watching Trip (Pasagshak Point). Nearly all of the Eastern Pacific gray whales pass by Narrow Cape during their migration. Bring a lunch and water. No hiking required. Full day trip out and back. We’ll meet at the ferry building on Center Street and Marine Way. Sponsored by Kodiak Audubon Society. Contact: Cindy Bower for more information (486-0499).

10:30–11:30am. “How Big is a Whale?” Storytime on the Porch. Bring your child (ages 3 to 6) and their favorite stuffed friend to build early literacy and social skills. Location: Baranov Museum (101 Marine Way). Contact 486-5920 for more information.
Wednesday   April 29
10:30–11:15am Families Understanding Nature (F.U.N.) A whale of a program for 3-5 year olds and their families. Location: Kodiak National Wildlife Refuge Visitor Center (402 Center Ave). 487-2626 or stop by the Kodiak Refuge Visitor Center for more information.

10:30–10:50am. Lap Sit Story Time. Sing along and move to Raffi’s classic, “Baby Beluga”. Location: Kodiak Public Library    (612 Egan Way). Contact 486-8686 for more information.

Thursday   April 30
11:00–11:30am. Discover Story Time. Featuring “The Big Blue Whale” written by Nicola Davis and illustrated by Nick Maland. Location: Kodiak Public Library (612 Egan Way). Contact 486-8686 for more information.

Friday   May 1 
10:30–10:50am. Toddler Story Time. Join Ellie as she reads “The Whales” by Cynthia Rylant. Location: Kodiak Public Library    (612 Egan Way). Contact 486-8686 for more information.

3:00– 4:45pm. First Friday Movie. “The Whale” is the true story of a young orca, who befriends the local people after being separated from its pod in British Columbia. Location: Kodiak Public Library (612 Egan Way). Contact 486-8686 for more information.

Saturday   May 2
9:30am. Whale Watching Hike (Narrow Cape). Nearly all of the Eastern Pacific gray whales pass by Narrow Cape during their migration. Bring lunch and water. Wear warm clothes and hiking boots. Full day trip out and back. Hike is 4.5 miles. We’ll meet at the ferry building (Center St and Marine Way) before driving to Fossil Beach. Sponsored by Kodiak Audubon. Gray whale skeleton on display at the Kodiak Refuge Visitor Center (402 Center Ave). Tuesday-Saturday 12-5pm, except Wednesdays they open at 10am (487-2626).

Dall’s Porpoise Skeleton on display at Fort Abercrombie’s Visitor Center.

Cuvier’s Beaked Whale Skeleton on display at the Fisheries Research Center on Near Island.

Kodiak Harbor (self-guided) Walking Tour. Learn about Kodiak’s Working Harbor by following placards provided by The Kodiak Maritime Museum. Begin near the Kodiak Harbormaster’s Office.
